Simulator

Nearly everyone connected with the operation of a fab can have an impact on cycle time, either positive or negative. When PMs are performed, when engineering experiments are performed, when training or other absences are granted - all these events may have small or large impacts on cycle time, depending on the WIP situation. Many such events require some lead time to arrange. It would be desired to have a forecast of the WIP movement so that such events could be timed to have minimal disruption of WIP movement and minimal extension of cycle times. It is envisioned that each fab would employ a planning analyst to operate Simulator and Planner and distribute results to relevant fab section heads, engineers and managers. Simulator might be run fairly frequently, e.g., once a day, to forecast WIP movement today and the following two days. This information could help identify the least disruptive times to execute PMs, engineering tests, training sessions, etc. Operation of Simulator would start with a download from the database that initiates the simulation input files. Similarly, the Simulator output would be uploaded to the database or other database suitable for engineering GUIs in order to display results to the user and to make them available for distribution to interested fab staff.

Simulator can be used to:

- Plan engineering and maintenance activities

- Plan staffing activities (training, education, etc.)

- Establish targets for WIP movements

- Help in decision making activities- "What if" questions

- Estimate benefits of planning and scheduling and or proposed enhancements
