Production planning

Planner is a sophisticated linear programming model which is utilized for planning capacity additions and equipment qualifications, as well as for identifying manufacturing bottlenecks and insuring feasibility of target output schedules. This model incorporates non-integer lead times between manufacturing steps and variables that plan the allocation of WIP among qualified machines. In some cases, the machines qualified for performing a given step is a dynamic set, depending on the assignment of the workload to machines at previous steps. This complexity is precisely captured in the formulation. Manufacturing engineers can use this planning model to determine how many machines need to be qualified to perform various manufacturing steps in order to meet market demands while maintaining process controllability. The planning model also is used to express factory capacities to higher-level supply-chain management systems, to project shipments of work-in-process to follow-on manufacturing plants, and to identify the bottleneck manufacturing steps that require buffer cycle time.
